A shrimp is a small shellfish with hard shell-like covering called an exoskeleton that protects them. Shrimps are consumed worldwide. With higher consumption, the amount of waste (leftover) has also increased.Shrimp has only 50% meat and rest 50% is discarded as shells, head and tail. With an increased consumption and processing of shrimps comes the problem of managing the waste. India alone generates 150,000 tons of shrimp waste per annum.
So managing the huge amount of waste (shrimp lefover) has became need of the hour. Waste management experts and researchers hit upon a possible potentiality of shrimp waste into valuable products, mainly bioactive compounds like chitin, chitosan, glucosamine, astaxanthin, amino acids and fatty acids etc.
These bioactive compounds have a wide range of applications including medical therapies, healthcare, cosmetics, paper pulp, textile industry, biotechnology and food applications.

Fishermen who cultivate Rohu, Catla and Carp fish in fresh water usually sell the fish but discard the scales haphazardly, thus causing smelly litter as they are not aware of the potential of ‘up-cycling’ this waste!
